Hemlock Inhaler

This Darling’s Hemlock inhaler is made from wood. Hemlock or conium is now recognised as a poison, but in fact it was amongst the first five substance to be officially listed as an inhalant in the 1867 British Pharmacopoeia. This inhaler listed suggested applications as, “for the throat, chest, lungs and nasal organs.” It was made by the Hemlock Oil Company in Derry, New Hampshire.
