This article from JAMA 1890 by J. Mount Bleyer MD explains a novel method for using a spray to administer medications to the deeper portions of the respiratory tract. It is particularly interesting in the extent to which he describes correct patient usage - still an issue today. He mentions using inhalations of silver nitrate, iodine, tannic acid and hydrogen peroxide.
