Bennet’s Inhaler

This may be the earliest published image of an  inhalation device. In 1654 an English physician, Christopher Bennet, himself suffering with consumption, wrote Theatri Tabidorum. In the book are four images and a description of the device shown here for administering fulmigations. Bennet experimented on himself with a number of different remedies, including balsam. The book is written in Latin, but an English translation appeared in 1720. Bennet died at the age of 38 a couple of years after his book was published. The picture of Bennet is from his book.
