Beddoes Apparatus

Dr Beddoes founded the Pneumatic Institute in Bristol in 1799 to pioneer the use of ‘pure’ oxygen as a therapy. He was a friend of Sir Humphrey Davy and the famous engineer James Watt. The concept of delivering medical gases was thus begun, originally known as ‘pneumatic medicine’. His device pictured here is from an 1865 publication of the Medical Pneumatic Apparatus Company.
