Shown here are Dr Edwin Alabone’s pocket inhaler and his 1912 book (47th edition) ‘The Cure of Consumption, Asthma, Bronchitis and other diseases of the chest’. The pocket inhaler is described on p65. He recommended menthol, eucalyptus, resorcin, oil of almonds, chloroform and chloric ether for use in the inhaler for treating phthisis. The inhaler, made of bakelite, circulated air across a pad soaked in the inhalant. Dr Alabone also designed a number of other inhalers described in his book.
