The first image is a Maw’s double valved inhaler. It is shown in Maw’s catalogue of 1869. The second image below is of Maw’s valved inhaler, understood to date from the 1880’s. The mouthpieces differ in shape. In both cases the mouthpiece has a valve allowing air to enter the inhaler. It is not uncommon, these days, to find examples where the original mouthpiece has been replaced. The S. Maw & Son name was changed in 1870 Maw’s and the business became known as S. Maw, Son & Thompson until around 1900 when it became known as S.Maw, Son & Sons – some surviving examples have bodies by Maw, Son & Thompson and mouthpieces from Maw, Son & Sons.
