Dr Ramadge’s inhaling pipe is described by Samuel Fitch in ‘Functions of the Lungs’ in 1854. It was invented some years previously and described by Francis Ramadge in Consumption Curable (1839). An extract of his book explaining his use of inhalation can be downloaded by the PDF link. Fitch also describes his experience of using the pipe to treat consumption and asthma. Fitch provides an account of his treatment of Miss Mariana Little who previously had treated her asthma with the inhalation of two pints of sulphuric ether per day. With Fitch’s help she was able to substitute the expensive and unpleasant ether with the inhalation of the smoke of brown paper soaked in a solution of saltpetre. Fitch Article download (PDF)
