The Nelson inhaler (and Boots own brand version) shown here was very popular in the early 20th century. Shown below is a blue marbled Boots version and a version made by Grimwades bearing a different print.

Inhaling through the mouthpiece caused air to enter from the spout and carry the medicated steamy vapour to the patient.

Nelson inhalers appear in the 1920 and 1964 Boots price list, and can still be bought new from specialist medical suppliers.

An ‘Army & Navy’ model is shown too.
