During the American prohibition (1920s) it was difficult to obtain alcohol. However, if alcohol was needed as a medical treatment then a special prescription was issued. This example is a prescription for one pint of whiskey for the treatment of asthma. It was recommended at a dose of one tablespoonful after every meal.
