Alfred Ramey invented two inhalers on a similar principle. In 1905 he patented the one shown in the photograph (the drawing is from his patent). Inside the tube was an absorbent material soaked with medicament. But even earlier than this he had been active in the field with the device shown in the advert below (from 1894). The instructions advised to put the twin tubes into the nostrils and the other tube into the mouth, and then blow. “Thus your lungs force highly medicated air into all parts of the head and throat”.
