The Dr Nelson Inhaler is a ceramic vapour inhaler that was first introduced by S. Maw & Son in 1865. The Lancet announced its introduction. There have been many varieties of this original design and the identity of Dr Nelson has been something of a mystery. Recent research, however, has revealed him to be Dr David Nelson, originally from Edinburgh. The Nelson inhaler is still available today. The 1869 Maw’s catalogue shows an inhaler identical to this. The first Nelson’s inhaler carried the S. Maw & Son name. In 1870 Maw’s became known as S. Maw, Son & Thompson until around 1900 when it became known as S.Maw, Son & Sons. The advert is from Chemist and Druggist 1889.
