The Ammonium Chloride Pipe is shown in an illustration in the Family Physician published by Cassell & Co in 1899. The pipe has a divided inset bowl so that the ammonium and the acid could be added separately. Small holes in the inset bowl permit the two reagents to mix and create ammonium chloride, for inhalation through the pipe. On the base of the pipe is a marking saying Hooker’s patent.
