The subtle art of delivering the medication while the patient slept was advocated by a number of companies selling pillow-inhalers and nasal masks. The adverts shown here come from the 1890’s and early 1900’s. They claim to be suitable for treating asthma, hay-fever, rose cold, bronchitis, catarrh and grippe as well as tuberculosis, diphtheria, deafness and whooping cough! The glass bowl shown is the container from inside a Pillow-inhaler (approx 1.5 cm high and 5 cm across).
